Self Care Focus: Summer Rituals

By Jo Cavanaugh

What are your summer rituals? Think back to the time when you were young and could hardly wait for the end of the school year. What one thing signaled summer? Was it the fire works on the Fourth of July? The pie eating contest at the fair? Was it a new library card and books to read in the shade of the trees in the back yard?

The enthusiasm and joy of childhood can be renewed with just a few moments of recall. Take some time to remember the simple pleasures of summer. Enjoy a glass of iced peppermint tea. Slurp a cherry popsicle and marvel at your red mouth. Who needs lipstick!

If you are having a hard time remembering, then make some new rituals. Step away from the television after dark and marvel at the summer sky. Re-read "Tom Sawyer" or "Huckleberry Finn" and relive days of cold lemonade and bare feet.

7 Ways To Guarantee You Stick To Your Workout Program
By Chris Guerriero

1. Begin Looking at Exercise Differently. Think of exercise as a way of life. Do not look as exercise as a chore or task that hurts you. Exercise is probably the most inexpensive and fun thing you can do for your life. Find something in exercise that you enjoy doing such as meeting new people, getting out of work, or your means of stress relief. It will be like brushing your teeth or eating breakfast. The sooner you view exercise as an activity of health and way of life, the sooner your results will show up.

2. Think Small. This is probably the hardest part of exercise for people to understand and follow through with. Most people want the results to happen now and start their workout program going all out. This is the number 1 reason men and women stop exercising. They expect too much. Breakdown your goals into sections or parts and choose some realistic goals. Before you know it, you lost those annoying 10 pounds and your health has improved ten fold.

3. Get A Workout Partner. If there is somebody waiting for you at the gym, the same time you are supposed to be there, you can bet you will be there 100% of the time to workout with him or her. It also can be immediately physically result producing since you will automatically be pushing each other to do better and better.

4. Change Your Workout More Often. Change: The essence of goal attainment. If you modify your workout more often, you will undoubtedly see changes. It prevents your muscles from getting stagnant and gets the doldrums out of working out.

5. Hire A Personal Trainer. Are you spending too much time at the gym and not seeing changes? You may be overworking certain muscles and not use others at all. Are you performing all exercises correctly? The slightest movement will do wonders for shaping and acquiring the look you want. A personal trainer will know exactly what to do to help you get results.

6. Workout At A Different Time Of Day. Rearrange your schedule to workout at different time of day. This will put a huge shock to your body and mind set regarding exercise.

7. Plan To Exercise For A Minimum Of Six Months. The whole idea regarding exercising is to get the results you desire and create a healthier you. The sure- fire way to do this is to consistently do it over a period of time. When commencing on an exercise program, regardless of your goals, you will need do this for a minimum of 6 months. Before you know it, exercise is now a way of life.

What A Great Night
By Aron Wallad

The Time Machine brings me back to Chancellor Avenue, Newark, New Jersey, circa 1964. Vintage cars like the ’62 Oldsmobile Spitfire, 1957 and 1958 Chevy’s roamed up and down the street passing The Bunny Hop, The Burgerama and Dave’s Hot Dog Haven. Did we only eat French fries, hot dogs and hamburgers? I think so.

On May 19th, 2005 I had the pleasure of attending the Sunday morning group of boys that used to frequent Chancellor Avenue. This event perpetuates the camaraderie that existed amongst us boys. For some old boys the time machine went back to the 1920’s. There were some guys there that were 90 years old. I felt great. I was one of the youngest guys to attend.

Wow what a group. There must have been over 200 boys of Chancellor there. All of us used to hang out in the neighborhood. Most of us went to Weequahic High School. Some went to South Side High School, and some guys were from Hillside. And most of us played baseball, basketball, softball, or football in our day.

The joyousness of the evening created a very loud room. I could not hear myself think at times. I found myself leaning over and placing my ear near someone’s mouth to hear what they were saying. I saw a lot of this going on.

What made the evening special for me was seeing some of my old buddies that I had not seen in quite some time. In some cases over 20 years. Being able to hug some great guys like Mr. Barone, Stanley Levy, Big Jeff Schulman, Joe Margulies, and Jake Davis made the evening a great night. I felt special because of the special people I was with.

This was a great night.

Self Care Tip

10 Tips for Responsible Medication Use
By Barbara C. Phillips

All medications, which include prescriptions, over-the-counter preparations, vitamin and mineral supplements, and herbal preparations, are potentially dangerous. Following some simple rules will not only reduce your chance of having a problem, but should reduce your cost as well.

1. Always shop around for medications there is a significant difference in cost from pharmacy to pharmacy. Check both online and offline sources. For example, several of my patients have realized a significant cost savings by using the Costco pharmacy as well as online Canadian pharmacies. Should you choose to use a Canadian pharmacy, please keep abreast of any laws that may affect your purchase.

2. Always check to see if a generic equivalent is available. Today, there are very few medications on the market where generics are not acceptable.

3. If you can, have your prescription filled for 90 days. It will cost less than if you bought 30 days worth over 3 months. One of the reasons is that pharmacies charge a filling fee for each prescription filled.

4. Will you medication allow you to take a half-tab? For example, if you are taking lisinopril 20 mg, you can purchase 40 mg tablets and break them in half for a savings of 50%. Always check with your health care provider and/or pharmacist first, not all medications can be broken. Also, consider those nifty little pill cutters. They work wonderfully.

5. Do you really have to take all that medication in the first place? The best advice I can give you is to put everything into a bag and take it with you to your appointment. Make sure that you and your provider are on the same page when it comes to medications/supplements that you are taking. This is especially true when you are seeing more than one prescribing provider. You may have duplicates that you are unaware of. Always ask, "Dd=o I really need this?"

6. Keep an up-to-date list of your medications with you at all times.

7. It is your responsibility to learn the names of your medications and why you are taking them! Most likely, your provider does not know what you mean by the "little pink pill or the "white capsule. There are literally dozens of each.

8. Check your medications before you leave the pharmacy. If something does not look right, ask about it right then. DO NOT take something you are unfamiliar with.

9. Follow label directions. If you are taking something for osteoporosis, chances are you were told to take it with a full glass of water, sitting upright while avoiding any other food or fluids for 30 minutes. They were not making it up! This goes for the labels on over-the-counter preparations. This is one time that "if a little is good, a lot must be better can be a dangerous thought.

10. Another very important tip. If at all possible, it is in your best interest to have a primary care provider. Ideally, he or she will coordinate your care with specialists, and keep track of all the medications you are on. If you have a complete profile on record, then between your one primary provider, and your one pharmacist, any problems in your medications should be picked up.

11. This bonus tip comes from a lesson taught to me by a wonderful patient of mine. If you and your partner both take medication, do NOT mix them up. It can have serious consequences!

While proper nutrition and exercise are the mainstays of treatment for most health challenges, medication use is sometimes unavoidable. Make sure you need them; know what they are and how to take them. Follow directions, and don't share! Most of all, always seek to understand what you are taking and what it's suppose to do for you.

Your body will thank you.
